Therapeutic massage involves the manipulation of soft tissue structures of the body to prevent and alleviate pain, discomfort, muscle spasm, and stress. It also improves the functioning of the circulatory, lymphatic, and nervous systems, and may improve the rate at which the body recovers from injury and illness.
Medical massage is a manual technique that is used in a rehabilitative therapy environment. It is not a general massage treatment like Swedish; rather, it is a therapy applied to a specific problem area or pathology. As a certified medical massage therapist, I use many of the same techniques as Swedish massage, but use them as a preliminary softening of tissue in order to get to the deep muscle tissue, complex joint systems, and inelastic connective tissue. Medical massage combines several manual therapies, including Swedish Massage, Trgger Point, Neuromuscular Massage.

Sports massage is the use of massage for the treatment and prevention of sports injuries.

 

Sport massage uses the application of massage techniques that follow sound anatomical and physiological consideration, combined with basic musculo-skeletal evaluation techniques to ensure the health and well-being of the athlete and to enhance athletic performance.

Sports massage can be used as part of a training program to help prevent injury; a rehabilitation program to treat injury; a warm up for an event or as part of the wind down after the event.

Athletes have discovered that specially designed sports massage promotes flexibility, reduces fatigue, improves endurance, helps prevent injuries and prepares their body and mind for optimal performance.

Massage therapy during pregnancy is a wonderful complementary choice for prenatal care. It is a healthy way to reduce stress and promote overall wellness. Massage relieves many of the normal discomforts experienced during pregnancy, such as backaches, stiff neck, leg cramps, headaches and edema (or swelling).

In addition, massage for pregnant women reduces stress on weight-bearing joints, encourages blood and lymph circulation, helps to relax nervous tension -- which aids in better sleep -- and can help relieve depression or anxiety caused by hormonal changes.
